The Indie Birth Model for Autonomous Midwifery
Maryn Green has been serving as an independent midwife since 2012. She began in Chicago, and after four years her program took her to Arizona where Green completed formal midwifery her midwifery license.
Maryn practiced out of ‘Red Rock Midwifery’ as an Arizona Licensed Midwife from 2009–2012.
Thanks to all her amazing experiences, she’s gifted the world her book as a co-author, “Indie Birth”. She’s also recorded over 150 birthing podcasts (you can listen to for free on her website!)
Green’s experience is vast, professionally and personally speaking. In addition to being a midwife, she has given birth to 10 children now aged 17 to under 1 year; all except the first birthed naturally from home. Maryn states she became a midwife after her own first birth, keen to learn how to ensure a woman’s birthing needs were met for her and her children.
A midwife and mother for many years, it’s exciting to hear Maryn’s still has intense passion in her voice when discussing her career choice; (19:30) “our decisions at birth affect the world and future generations…. It’s why I get up every day and feel renewed.”
When asked to describe her role as a Midwife, Maryn states; (04:37 min) “a midwife is someone that assists a woman in her pregnancy, during her birth, and after the baby; as more than emotional support.”
She continues, “So we should have clinical knowledge and understanding of the normal birth process, as well as the understanding of pathological things.” but she also states, “I don’t believe midwives are medical providers.”
Akasha asked Green about her midwifery appointments and we were quite surprised at her response. (19:50) “I think prenatal care is largely what a woman wants it to be.” and (23:40) “Most women have no concept of what prenatal care means outside of the hour they spend at the doctor’s office” Mayn helps us break things down a bit.
Maryn walks us through what a first appointment looks like with her. During your first appointment, Green will conduct a thorough family history, look at her clients’ daily life, & complete a nutrition assessment reviewing a ‘food journal’ assignment she gives at booking, and discuss a family’s desires for a home birth.
Green believes setting a foundation and developing a relationship is incredibly essential for a successful birthing outcome.
Green describes how she professionally she embraces ‘The Wise Woman Model’ put forward by Susun Weed, when a woman is in her care.
This concept of healing incorporates complex interactions between the patient, the healer, the surrounding environment, and the divine. This model has globally empowered women for 1000’s of years. Source to Susun Weed’s work: http://www.susunweed.com/Article_Scientific_Tradition.htm
When discussing labor induction, mom’s desperately want to know about the “38 weeks membrane sweep” western medical providers are known for, in the hospital setting. (9:44) Maryn describes the procedure in our webinar which allows listeners to decide if this procedure is beneficial to women or not but adding, there’s an increased risk of infection to the mother when this procedure is done to induce labor. Green holds to her love for a healthy and natural birthing method.
Her book and education ecosystem are aptly termed“Indie birth.” The concept is based on a woman’s autonomy and pushes out myths and misconceptions during this sometimes complicated time. (31:00) “Making decisions out of fear is where people get the experience they don’t want,” she tells us.
Maryn tells us, ‘Indie Birth’ provides an innovative option for pregnant and birthing women who want to expand their education and belief system. Green and her team offer concrete knowledge, ancient wisdom, and current research; so women can make choices with full awareness, from the full spectrum of options.
Green believes midwifery has become over-medicalized, taking us far from the knowledge, support, power, and wisdom that a woman needs in order to birth and mother her children with dignity.
